Sexy vs. Non-Sexy Businesses: What’s Better?

I’m known for liking non-sexy businesses. I think they are great for a variety of reasons but before we get into why let me explain what exactly a non-sexy business is. A non-sexy business is a business that isn’t trendy or flashy and tends to sell products/services that are consumer necessities rather than “desirables.”

These non-sexy businesses are called “dull normal” businesses in the franchise industry. They’re needed in most economies, recession-resistant and tend to have longer life cycles.

However, they’re not exciting businesses. And you have to be comfortable telling your family, friends, and neighbors that you are the proud owner of one of these businesses. Think sewers, porta-potties, waste management, and cleaning types of franchises. They are not sexy for the product but sexy for the income potential and the recession-resistant nature of the businesses.

So, what is a sexy business model?

These go hand-in-hand with people’s interests or hobbies. Fitness, desserts, and animals are a few of the top industries right now. Sexy businesses typically do well when people have disposable income but they can rise and fall with the economy (this depends more on the strength of the business model than just the product.)

These businesses can have a shorter life cycle due to high competition (another downfall of “trendiness”.) But this can be offset with the culture of the business and the customers that they build.

For example, when I lived in Denver, I worked out at a gym near a Jazzercise location. The Jazzercise was always packed! Some people worry about fitness because of the competition and perceived trendy nature of the industry. Think of the Jazzercise franchisee…she had built such a strong culture that she built a huge business even with all of the fitness competition in the area…and it was jazzercise!

The truth is, I love sexy AND non-sexy business models! It’s all about which one makes the most sense for your skills, goals, and lifestyle (and makes money!)

If you’re interested in non-sexy businesses, keep reading for one of the most promising businesses I’ve seen in YEARS! This is an industry that is about as sexy as Porta Potties but is great because:

  • It’s business-to-business
  • Low overhead, it doesn’t require a facility
  • Only a few employees
  • DISRUPTIVE! Disrupting an industry is key today! (Tesla, Uber, AirBNB were all disruptive to their industries)
  • Recurring revenue
  • Full-time or semi-absentee
  • Saves your customer’s money! Guaranteed.

This is similar to a trucking, or route company, like FedEx. What do they do? They save their customers money. Do I have your interest? Call me to see if your market is still available! Schedule a Call.
